Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein

3.0

This story is a cute and easy read for kids. It reminds me very much of the feeling I got watching an Arthur on a PBS rap about the joys of having a library card. Within its pages there are rudimentary lessons about integrity, friendship, teamwork, and the marvels of a good book. Plus puzzles, and quite an extensive book suggestion list to think about!

We follow Kyle Keeley and his friends in their pursuit of the chance to be the new spokesman for the ultra pimped out and modernized public library. Dr. Zinchenko planned an escape room type overnight puzzle for the kids, and then a birthday party for Lemoncello right afterward— I would have died for an opportunity like that. I’m glad that friendship prevailed and that (spoiler!) apparently the whole of Team Kyle could win and split the prize. Personally, I was rooting for Hayley Dayley.

I found myself thinking of the Central Library in Los Angeles, and apart from the floating bookshelf ladder and nearly constant hologram exposition, the place is massive and comes stacked with tablets, cafes, museum exhibits, and computers. There’s an argument here for realism v.s. this Willy Wonka level of enthusiasm and fantasy, but I’m too enchanted to reach for it. What’s wrong with a little enthusiasm? I’m not the target audience, but I’m hanging on to my copy until my little cousin is like, nine. I might have to convince her to get a library card!
