An atrociously vile, ugly, and overwritten mess of a book. Koontz is a hack, but this is NOT the work of a hack. It's the work of a very, very bad writer. Whispers is his Moby Dick, his Gatsby, and the afterword where he talks about how deeply personal the story is to him, how he did thirty one drafts of the story, and how he had to fight with his publisher to keep them from chopping the manuscript in half, just makes it that much more depressing of an experience.
