Heads of the Colored People by Nafissa Thompson-Spires

4.0

Nafissa Thompson-Spires (re)creates Black spaces that are relatable to those who reside there and are a window into those spaces for those of us who don’t.

I put this on my race & social justice shelf, but the vignettes are not overtly about racism. This is Black on Black cohabitation in a universe where racism is omnipresent. The bigotry seeps in and makes itself apparent in the subtleties of skin color, darker vs lighter, and the micro-aggressions of class, richer vs poorer.

Obviously, when it comes to Black spaces I am kibitzing—but these stories ring true. There are no dull moments here.
