Slightly Married
by Mary Balogh
3.5 Stars.
Strongly structured characters, heart jerking moments, but I found myself not overly excited about the romance aspect.
Mary Balogh serves us a marriage of convenience troupe with plenty of drama in the works. But I feel she failed to completely nail crucial moments of tension. Eve's reunion with her ex-secret-fiancé felt lukewarm and ultimately was dismissed without a definitive conclusion. The ex walks away declaring his eagerness to see her between the sheets in about a week or two. What was the point of all that drama if we are denied closure? And I was very disappointed to see Eve denied a moment of triumph over the ex that did her wrong. Her relationship with Aidan also felt anticlimactic. When they go to bed with each other for the first time there was zero preheating. He just suggested that maybe they should sleep together and she went with it. There was no passion- no boiled over feelings of lust, anger, frustration or anything. And as the story progresses I cannot name one significant moment of connection or understanding between the two. It's great they got their HEA, but I would have been equally content if they continued their initial plan of living separate lives.
I will say that this did help curve my Bridgerton withdrawal. Lot's of society, ballroom parties and all that. And I also liked the child custody drama, which is kind of rare in this genre.
