The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

4.0

Mika is a witch in a world where witches are sure they must be alone— it’s the only way they can be safe. But it’s lonely, so when she gets a mysterious email from one of the guardians of three young witches, she can’t resist the chance to help.

This is twice in the past three weeks I’ve been disappointed in a book not because there’s anything wrong with it but because it wasn’t the book I wanted it to be. At one point, I considered skipping a hundred pages or so just to find out how it ends. But I kept going, and I have to admit that the climactic scene where they figure out how to fix everything that has gone wrong is beautifully, cleverly done (that was very carefully phrased to avoid spoilers).

So it gets four stars. The beginning is great, but it really bogs down in the middle with a bunch of romance novel clichés. I love a good romance novel when I’m in the mood for it, but I was hoping for something else from this book. As another reviewer put it, more tiny murderous witchlings, please, learning to control their powers.
