This book is matter-of-fact about being completely fucking devastating. One death is a tragedy, one hundred, or one thousand, or one hundred thousand, or one million are statistics. This is as true in a global pandemic as it is in a genocide.

Each tragedy in the statistic has a story associated with it, and this book tells of both the stories and the statistics, the bad intentions leading to bad actions (murder your neighbors because we call the Tutsis and you Hutus), clear intentions leading to some lives saved (Paul Rusesabagina providing a semblance of safe harbor at the Hôtel Diplomates), good intentions leading to terrible outcomes (the international community effectively, if unintentionally, giving shelter to the interahamwe).
