I have mixed feelings about this one. It is a great way to get some insights into everyday life in the past and I really liked that there were some (for the time) progressive elements (mostly Jo and her gender expression, view on romance and her friendship with Laurie) but there is also a ton of very heavy moralising and the characteristics that made the characters interesting were very much portrayed as flaws to overcome. Still, there were some chapters I really enjoyed and I assume that there are some elements that were very progressive back then that I didn't pick up with my modern viewpoint.

My copy didn't include the sequel and I'm not sure if I would pick it up.
