Not my favourite Ellroy book, but I think it's one of his most accessible books. American Tabloid/[b:The Cold Six Thousand|4191|The Cold Six Thousand|James Ellroy|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1165390582s/4191.jpg|22797] is much better but not for the faint of heart, in fact it's so fast paced you might feel your heart racing to keep up, like you are popping pills, swigging alcohol like the main characters (ha).
If you don't like descriptions violence, racism, sexism, racial violence, sexist violence, crooked cops, sleazy tabloids, homophobia, etc...well, you are going to have a hard time getting through any of Ellroy's stuff.
