such a fun and different supernatural historical fantasy adventure with plenty of wonderfully ridiculous elements set in the indian ocean. it seems rare to have a muslim mom as the main character of a pirate adventure story and this was done so well. i loved all the diversity of the main characters, in a way that didn’t feel forced and highlighted their stories and individualities naturally.

i originally checked the book out on ebook, as that’s my usual format for fiction, but then was daunted by the length because i found myself distracted in the first 5ish pages, where i was re-reading paragraphs. switched to audio, which was engaging and fun, although it did help me to also check out an ebook to check on some of the spellings of names/places. at that point since i was pulled into the story, i found myself reading ahead :)
