Another TJR read down!
“For a while, Daisy Jones & The Six were everywhere. Their albums were on every turntable, they sold out arenas from coast to coast, their sound defined an era. And then, on 12 July 1979, they split.
Nobody ever knew why.
The only thing they all know for sure is that from the moment Daisy Jones walked barefoot onstage at the Whisky, their lives were irrevocably changed.
Making music is never just about the music. And sometimes it can be hard to tell where the sound stops and the feelings begin.”
What I loved:
- The Interview style format was surprisingly easy to get into and kept the story moving
- Powerful, female characters. Daisy, Karen, Camila and Simone are all forces to be reckoned with. TJR knows how to write icons!
- Late 60’s and early 70’s aesthetic
- Realistic portrayal of addiction; the highest of highs and euphoria coupled with the struggles of sobriety
What I didn’t love:
- Even with all the feminism and musical appreciation, Daisy and Billy are fucking toxic. He said, she said, sometimes without the others’ points of view makes it impossible to know what truly happened and who’s fault it was
- The main plot twist wasn’t all that shocking to me (did it have anything to do with the extra bit I read at the end before I should have? I don’t think it would have made a huge difference).
that being Julia is the interviewer and her mother, Camila had died - Additionally the reason for the band breaking up was less like a big bang and more like a small little snare drum (ha, musical instrument humour).
shocked that Daisy didn’t OD for real at some point in this book, I thought it was coming toward the end
Overall a solid read and another great one for TJR. I haven’t watched the Tv show adaptation yet, though already the songs are stuck in my head.
