American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House
by Jon Meacham
Caveat: I'm not a history scholar, and have not read much on Jackson's life (other than what I know from being a Tennessean) Having gotten that out of the way, I must say I truly enjoyed this book. It was fillled with information from Jackson's entire life, but the author did a fantastic job with the narrative. It did not drag as some do when they try so hard to stay true to a historical timeline. The author does a nice job of pulling in primary sources--letters to/from Jackson and his family members/friends as well as speeches by important people of the day. The author does a good job explaining Jackson's personality and nature, and his relationships with those around him, both his friends, intimates, and enemies.
I learned so much about ourcountry's early history, and was struck by the truism that history repeats itself. There were so many situations that Jackson and the country faced that we continue to face today. I was also fascinated by the final chapters and their emphasis on how subsequent Presidents looked to his speeches and his life for inspiration during difficult periods in our nation's history.
I highly recommend this book.
