The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz

4.0

Wow. That was a ride.

This book is *not* subtle about its feminist message. I'm okay with that. Some readers might not be. I loved the time travel angle and technology, where you can go back and forth but not overlap with yourself because that causes problems - for you as well as the timeline. So once you've been to, say, September 1-15, 1917, you can't go back there again even elsewhere in the world. This kept things interesting at a few points. We are following a seasoned time traveler who is trying to right wrongs and pave the way to a more feminist future where women have bodily autonomy, against a misogynistic group who is trying to create a future where women are little more than incubators and indentured workers. I found a few parts of the back and forth didn't work for me, but the overall narrative arc about this time traveler and her own life found a way to gut punch me more than once. It's a few days later and I still want to hurt some people who hurt her. I know it's a book. I still feel what I feel.

Glad I read it, thanks Denise for the recommendation and getting it on the book club reading list!
