Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie
4.0
The review might include a spoiler although it doesn't reveal anything about the murder.
_____
Did we see a glimpse of Mary Westmacott?
Sad Cypress unlike Agatha Christie's usual narration is written through the eyes of a murder suspect for the first half of the book. The climax also includes a cinematic court scene.
While reading this emotionally driven story I couldn't help but make certain parallels to Christie's life. Although my idea could be far-fetched, it still made me invest myself in the story.
As for the end, it was somewhat disappointing. I feel a crime of passion would have suited the whole story more than how it turned out. Although, it was perfectly logical because Christie is marvelous as always.
Another point to note was the car's number plate: 2022. Agatha might have picked that number randomly but it felt like a punch in the face of fascination that unknowing to her, people are reading and enjoying her books in the year 2022 as well and will do it for a good time ahead.
In general, I am left with a feeling of longing to read a romance novel by Agatha because I feel she could have pulled that off as well.
