Beauty and the Billionaire by Jessica Clare

3.0

This is one of those times when I wish that Goodreads had a more complex rating system. I think that this book was not without it's merit but there were things about it that were really difficult to get past for me. I consistent complaint that I have about these romance novels is the lack of development between the main characters, but that it something that I feel like I can't allow to influence the rating because it's how these novels are.

Beyond that, a lot of Hunter and Gretchen's reactions to things were incredibly unrealistic or just... off. In places it almost seemed like Clare was writing a totally different character and thought the scene might fit better into this book than another one in this series.

Overall, I liked the storyline of this book and I thought the idea of him being both physically beastly and emotionally withdrawn was nice. I just would have liked to see a bit more development through between "beast" Hunter and "prince" Hunter. I also felt like we were really left hanging there at the end, I was expecting at least one more chapter to tie things together.

Gretchen was lacking depth in a lot of places but I really liked her quippy, snarky personality. She balanced Hunter well in that regard, since he needs someone that won't let him bulldoze them. I also think her confidence was required to advance the plot, since he had no idea how to.

It was fine, but nothing to write home about in my opinion. It is also hard to create a good Beauty and the Beast retelling because it is such a played out trope. I think the author did okay with what she was working with and the people that are picking up this book aren't really looking for a intricate plot with lots of twists and turns. They want an easy romance that doesn't take too much brain power to process. I liked this book as a palate cleanser between more detailed novels.
