emotional hopeful mysterious sad tense fast-paced

Areya is on the cusp of her 21st birthday celebration, her first real vacation and her first time seeing the ocean.  The woman who raised her like a daughter loves and sacrifices for her, she has a couple of close friends who like her quirky self and she's happy.  What she doesn't know she's also on the cusp of her biggest horror, the loss of her freedom and discovery that regardless how attractive they are, monsters are real.

In her deepest grief, Areya is forcibly taken to a land she never knew existed by Ash and Calyx, who appear to be two gorgeous men, but are so much more deadly.  She is completely clueless as to why her world has been torn apart, why she has been targeted for death and what they say her bloodline can do.  She's equally clueless as to why she feels completely drawn to her captor, Ash, whom she's vowed to punish.  When disaster strikes again she has to decide if she is going to feed her desire for retribution or let compassion dictate her choices.

This novel has some lovely moments of grace, tenderness and devotion.  These are themes that aren't seen enough in the world and are heartening.  I appreciate the complexity of Ash's character and deep feelings he expresses and demonstrates.  The various forms of friendships are rewarding.  The information around Areya's ancestry kept popping me out of my ability to willingly suspend disbelief.  I also had difficulty getting an authentic grasp on her personality.  As a minor note, I would have preferred more attention given to the world building.  Thank you Cosette Verga and NetGalley for this ARC.
