Defy the Stars
by Claudia Gray
Solid 4.5 stars. It took me a little bit to get into the book at the start, I think because I'm not much into war or religion and one of the main characters' life involves those two things kind of a lot.
But after the first few chapters I blew through the rest of this book. I am interested in several of the concepts at the heart of this story, namely what makes a human human? What is a soul? Can AI have a soul? And I thought this book balanced those questions well with the plot and other questions.
There were several plot elements that felt a little too convenient at times, although most of them were clearly setups for future books. But they weren't annoying enough to ruin my enjoyment. I'll definitely read the next book.
