50% of the way through this I was CERTAIN this was going to be a 5 star read for me, and I’m sad to say I was wrong.
The last third or so of this book just didn’t have heart for me like the first two thirds did. I feel like it lacked nuance in some ways (such as Robin seemingly not giving a single shit about civilians who got hurt in his occupation of Babel, and I get that he was rightfully angry and making a point but not batting an eye did not seem like him!! ) that just didn’t seem to align with what we’d already learned about the characters. Robin and Victoire felt like they had barely spoken before they wound up being the only two left, and I didn’t really feel they were anything more than acquaintances, much less co-revolutionaries. I wanted so much to believe that the revolution was believable, but it just felt so out of place and disjointed to me. AND we never find out what Griffin wrote in his letter, which seemed to pack a punch based on the epilogue. Overall, just didn’t continue to pack the punch that the first two thirds did. Clearly other people do not feel this way, as this has well over a 4 star rating across multiple reading platforms, so this could very well just be a me problem (and if it is, I’m sad about it!).
