My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies by Ed Brubaker

4.0

A tough read if you have any history of substance abuse or friends/family with a history, but this book was really well written and the twist got me. The color scheme and illustrations felt dreamy and otherworldly, like one might feel on drugs. The main character, Ellie, is completely believable as a junkie and you'll recognize some of her impulses as true to form. Overall, I felt really sad after this read, but I felt moved, as if whoever wrote it was processing some things from their own life through the art and story.
