Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5.0

Gillian Flynn continues to impress me with her darkly disturbing imagination.

I enjoyed the style of how the book was written. It bounces back and forth between Nick's POV and flashbacks of Amy's POV as seen through diary entries.

At first, I sympathized with Amy's character. To read her diary entries paints the picture of a deeply devote wife to her indifferent and chilly husband. You think, "Oh, how sad! Here's a woman committed to her relationship with her husband and he's the epitome of douche."

And then...that all changes once you realize that Amy is very much alive and well and planned the whole thing! Now I'm thinking, "What a manipulative little shit!" And not just manipulative, but calculating. The thought and deviousness that goes into plotting something of that magnitude is staggering.

Now, I'm feeling bad for Nick, yet, he's not by any means the hero. He's still the douche you kind of hated in the beginning of the book. Except now, Amy has trumped his personality flaws with her own...in spades.

By the end of the book, I'm tempted to say I hated both characters, but was still invested in their story. Which I think is the perfect example of Flynn's talent.

The ending was a definite WTF moment that left me both satisfied and unsatisfied at the same time.

A+ Would read again.
