“I want everything you’ll willingly give me.”
Body Check by Brigham Vaughn is the second book in the Scoring Chances series. While I liked it overall, it lacks something (I don’t know what) that the first book Goaltender Interference had.
Gavin and Dakota don’t start on the right foot. Gavin’s kind of a jerk at first (I thought I was not going to like him), and Dakota’s super guarded. But they slowly start to figure each other out, and witnessing how they fell in love with each other without realizing it was nice to see.
“I care about you, Dakota. My life is better with you in it.”
“I do care about you too,” he finally whispered.
There’s a big age gap (Gavin is 41 and Dakota is 29) and a lot of emotional baggage between them, so things are messy. I really liked how their connection grew, especially once they started trusting each other.
“Maybe forever wasn’t so impossible with the right person.”
I really liked the relationship between Gavin and his twin Thad. How it evolved throughout the book. This was especially emotional. And also the relationship Dakota has with his sister. How she supports him and they are there for each other.
“For years, I told myself I had this amazing life. I’d look at all my accomplishments as proof I had it all together but I don’t. I feel like a failure sometimes. Sometimes I still feel like that guy who was a draft bust. Who never amounted to anything as a player.”
That said, the pacing felt a bit uneven, and some plot points (like the financial stuff toward the end) felt a little too convenient. Still, the cameos from other series characters were a nice touch (love the O’Shea family). Not a new favourite, but definitely worth the read. I’ll be waiting for the next one in the series.
I received an eARC via Neon Rainbow for free, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation. Thank you Neon Rainbow and Brigham Vaughn for the free eARC.
