This was a perfect debut so much so that it didn’t feel like a debut at all. The writing was very addictive, I couldn’t stop reading and wanting to know what was going to happen next. The way Tracy writes about loss/grief/trauma/racism is so well done and it helped to educate me on things I wasn’t aware of. It was the perfect amount of fantasy and realism woven together to create such a powerful story.
The main characters were all very likeable and even the side characters seemed to be quite fleshed out with their own distinct voices which doesn’t happen a lot in fantasy, especially in the first books.
The only triangle didn’t even bug me much because it seems to be taking maybe a different sort of turn than most love triangles do in these sorts of books (well I think it is at least).
I am SO excited to read the sequel and see what happens next for these characters. By far one of the best books I’ve read this year.
