The Fire and the Darkness: The Bombing of Dresden, 1945 by Sinclair McKay

4.0

A very interesting, if long and saddening, explanation of this story. The characters provide a lot of personal narrative to explain a disastrous moment in the Second World War. I knew the basics, and could have assumed others, but the window into the collapse of the Third Reich and the choices of the Allies in bombing this city (and in this way) helped understand it better and reminded me of the removed choices of the war's leaders. I think even more examination of the Allies would have added to the overall examination of the reasons for the bombing of Dresden, or add more blame to it, but it could seem less a focus just because of the story of people who experienced the bombing and how much that captures your attention.

Did take me a while to get through it, not always easy to focus on the story especially at night.
