Here Comes the Sun
by Nicole Dennis-Benn
Maybe if the book had a different title/cover I would have liked it more. Even reading the blurb, I didn't expect the story to be so unrelentingly dismal. All the characters and their back stories are well developed and believable. The book definitely made me consider in a real way the impact of having tourism as a main driver of the economy. The audiobook narrator was exceptional, capturing the Jamaican dialect so well (I expect it may have been challenging to read) and giving all the different POVs a different sound.
Still, about every few chapters I almost stopped reading. Maybe because the characters were increasingly unlikeable, but I didn't have anyone to root for or any outcome to hope for. Takeaway: life in Jamaica is hard and depressing. But shouldn't I come away from the novel with something more?
