The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel

4.0

Interesting book about a topic I've never thought about: textiles. The author gives an overview of the history of some of the more common ones like cotton etc. The focus is mostly anglocentric, with a detour to learn about silk. I'd have liked to see more inclusion of textile production and history of other cultures. I gotta say that as someone whose main awareness of textiles is the climate concerns around fast fashion, aka the end point of fabrics, I was way over my head for the majority of the book. I watched several YouTube videos to picture the processes and production methods the author described. I also gained a much deeper appreciation for every piece of clothing I own and wear.
