At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft
5.0

At the Mountains of Madness is by far my favourite of HP Lovecraft's work. The majority of this book is devoted to descriptions of the great Antarctic city that the characters find and explore. The whole thing goes against the stereotypes of Lovecraft who is best known for simply calling things indescribable and moving on, this time he goes into great detail and paints us a wonderful and somewhat unnerving picture of a world eons ago. A world with ancient people whose appearance is so far removed from that of a human that members of the expedition can't even agree whether they were plant, animal, or some unknown category of life.
