I've been wanting to read this series for so long, and I'm very glad to have begun. This was such a wonderful story. At the age of 12, Sophia (Sophie) Lancaster and her mom left home in the middle of the night and made an escape to New York City. For most of her life, she never looked back. That is, until she finds herself returning to Poplar Falls after the death of her grandmother...and facing her dad an his family for the first time since she'd left.

As if she wasn't dealing with enough, she also has to deal with a broody Braxton Young who works on the farm and is the nephew of her dad's current wife. Neither one of them are too impressed with the other upon meeting, nor for many of their subsequent interactions. She was the city girl. He was the country boy who lived what should have been her life. But the more time they spend together, the more that annoyance shifts to something warmer. In addition to the romance, there is a lot of family drama and family secrets mixed in, not to mention a plethora of second chances to go around.

Despite the familial strains, this was such a charming small town romance. Brax and Sophie are so wonderful together once they give each other a chance. The man may be grumpy, but he is also so sweet and protective of those he cares for. I adore the extended family and friends unit in Poplar Falls, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the series entails!

🎧: While I enjoyed the story, I wasn't overly crazy about the male narrator for this book. For me, it did not detract from the story, but I definitely preferred listening from Sophie's POV.
