Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands
by Kate Beaton
challenging
emotional
reflective
medium-paced
I am generally a fan of memoirs because I think that everyone's story is worth telling, and I appreciate those who have the courage to do so. Before reading this book, I didn't know much about the Canadian oil sands, but Kate Beaton does an excellent job depicting what life was like for her there, and the particular challenges she experienced as a woman-- any woman-- in that environment. I felt disgusted and uncomfortable for a lot of the book; her sadness clearly came through via both the dialogue and artwork. The best parts are Beaton's conversations with her sister, one of the few other characters who is described with more depth. I don't read many graphic novels so can't really compare to others, but I was interested enough to finish this one relatively quickly and I enjoyed the artwork, especially the full page pieces. A lot of the story is a bit monotonous and definitely heavy, but that is the point.
