I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

challenging dark emotional funny reflective sad tense fast-paced

Gracious. This was really tough. I'm glad I listened to it but I don't think that's necessary. I feel so bad for Jeanette but also for her mother and the cycles of disorder that is obviously generations old.

This was super engaging and made me want to keep listening. McCurdy is a great writer, putting in her emotion but not dragging you with it. The telling moves at a brisk enough pace to keep you from feeling stuck and yet doesn't rush.

As a mom, I want to go back in time and snatch baby Jeanette away and hug and care for her like she should have been cared for. I also see the highly sensitive personality traits in Jeanette that N2 has and it's a boatload of confirmation that my extra efforts to be very careful about how she is raised are valid and good and helpful. Because in the wrong hands, she could easily be Jeanette. Broke my heart. But the redemptive times are sweet.

MAJOR TRIGGER WARNINGS: Disordered eating, emotional and psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and some rape. For anyone who struggles with these, steer clear. These are rough. Massive codependency as well.
