City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

4.0

So, I read this in November of last year (2017) and to be completely honest I was kind of disappointed... I have been a fan of the Mortal Instruments series since I was like 11 years old and I read the series for the first time, and when I read it then I ADORED it. However, when I read it last year despite loving the story, I just didn't click with the writing as I had in the past (and I felt that way for the first four books during my reread).

However, when booktuber Emmmabooks announced she was having a read-along I wanted to participate but didn't want to reread the whole series when I had just read them all a few months ago, so I decided to opt for the audiobook.

Surprisingly I REALLY enjoyed it, and I felt way more drawn into the story while listening than I had while I was reading it. I think the primary reason for this is that is that Cassie's writing just wasn't as good during the earlier books as it is in the last two and even in the prequel series. However, despite really liking the audiobook the narrator was not great. Thankfully the way she voiced the primary characters (Clary, Jace, Simon, The Lightwoods) were all decent enough, but some characters i.e. Raphael, Valentine and the Seelie Queen were SO BAD and it made listening to their sections borderline painful.

Nonetheless, I'm glad I listened to this audiobook as it renewed my love for the earlier books in the series!
