Darkness, Kindled by Samantha Young

5.0

Original 2011 rating was 5 but I feel like it is 4 in 2024 reading tastes for me.

This book could have been two separate books. In hindsight, I'm not sure what the hell book one was about if the author had these two plot points planned. I feel like this series should have been 5 books long.
It was a shame to have Lillif built up to be this hugely powerful being and when it came down to it, she was stopped pretty easily by Asmodeus.
I thought it would have been better to have them too equally matched because they are each other's halves and then get Ari to tip the scales. Also, I didn't believe for one second that Lillif needed Ari on her side, I know we were going to a lot of development with this girl but I have yet to really see her kick ass - everyone is constantly saving her.
I understand that the dreams of the twins were meant to help us build up the moment Asmodeus takes her out but I still think we could have spent longer with that to really understand how hard it was for him to do this.
It might've made the second half of the book make more sense. It didn't really believe why Asmodeus wants Ari so badly but hey I'll buy it for the sake of the romance triangle which I'm always a fan of. The wedding plot was really fun but that could have been a whole book. This is a peak example of I LOVE IT but also I definitely don't believe it. I love the jealousy and triangle aspect of it all and ultimately, I did believe how they got out of the situation. But I didn't buy why Asmodeus didn't just kill Jai or trap him somewhere, I don't know. He's a really old being, I'm sure he would've thought of something more clever and he's immortal so you know, there's all that time.

Samantha definitely had readers frustrated at why the pair haven't slept together for ages. Ari & the readers like: JAI, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING MAN? THERE IS AN ANCIENT BEING VISITING HER DREAMS EVERY NIGHT AND SHE'S FALLING ASLEEP HORNY. DAWG.

P.S. so happy Jai kicked the shit out of David. So glad that came back to pay off - fuck that guy. Go Jai!

I'm really glad I re-read this series. Samantha Young is one of my favourite romance authors and it's been so long that now I get to re-read all the books I loved because I've forgotten all the details. My ratings may have changed from a few years ago but I can just see how she's developed as a writer and I as a reader. I'll always enjoy the heart of these books, they may not have been 5 stars this time for me across the board but they are still some of my most cherished books. Thank you for the adventure.
