Always the Almost
by Edward Underhill
Such a beautiful ode to trans joy, and to finding yourself through your passions. As a high school teacher, I saw so many of my students in these characters - the good, the bad, and the ugly.
CW: infidelity, I’ll try to be as spoiler-free as possible!
I actually liked how Miles and Eric resolved their conflict, and it felt like it fit with Miles being an imperfect person making errors in his quest to find himself. He took accountability and modeled what repair can look like. That’s important to see!
This would have been a 5 star read for me if not for the Paige x Rachel subplot. To me it felt like an attempt to normalize hurting people in the name of finding yourself, and to excuse that behavior as a common adolescent mistake? It didn’t work for me.
All in all, still a great read with complex characters to root for. Grateful to Edward Underhill for giving us queer adolescent joy in a really scary time.
