<mini rant about a significant side plot> Mostly, I cannot condone choosing to make the wild animals Jane must kill to survive dogs. It could've been wolves, wild dogs even, or boars. We barely talk about the meat prep (thankfully) but the references to dead dogs was such that I almost gave up despite enjoying the writing and storyline. Owl states they are mutant, distantly related but still essentially dogs. So why choose to refer to them as dogs?  Jane doesn't know what dogs are so it's not to simplify it for her. I am biased but feel like if you're going to kill dogs, I want a solid reason and I never got one here.
