Realm Breaker by Victoria Aveyard
4.75
adventurous

Starts slow and builds into something fun and adventurous!

I read “Red Queen” by Aveyard and enjoyed the lush setting and story-telling, but was not happy with some choices in plot, so I determined I would switch to a different series by her. I’m glad I gave this series a try! At first I was really struggling with the multiple POVs and couldn’t keep all the characters apart in my mind. It was slow going. Once I was able to world build and understand each person I loved how random this crew is. A female assassin, a bastard of a pirate, a noble squire, an immortal, a criminal forger, and mysterious ancient crone? Love that. I can see how it has LOTR comparisons because they’re essentially trying to save the world, Corayne has this destiny trust upon her (chosen one vibes), and the team is from all over.

Something random notes in my notes app during reading:
✧ Appreciate the POC and LGBT representation!
✧ Some of the characters being repressed gives a greater opportunity for character development.
SPOILERS *************
✧ I adore the tension between Sorasa and Dom. Enemies to lovers??? I ship it at least. She sounds hot.
✧ The women being the more wild, feral, aggressive characters and the men being kind of refined/noble lends itself to a lot of humor. The squire with his teapot and the heroine with her sword.
✧ I found it fun to see more from the side of the antagonist than a reader typically gets. We get to see Erida kind of manipulated into poor choices, and I somewhat understand cause Taristan sounds sexy with his lil eyebrow scar. Wouldn’t do the same, but I get it. It was embarrassing to see him avoid her marriage bed so determinedly though hahah. Big ole nope.
✧ I loved that it was realistic with emotions after being forced into killing. Not all the characters take killing lightly, it isn’t glossed over, it has them shaken up. Real!
3.75 is because I feel the next books have room to be even better.
