The First Part Last
by Angela Johnson
I like the fact that it isn’t very often that the protagonist of a novel about teen pregnancy actually comes from a family of upper middle class New Yorkers. How the parents reacted caught my attention most. I feel they were very true to what a lot of parents would do in that situation. When both kids broke the news to their parents, the parents sat there in stunned silence at first; in my head, I imagined them thinking to themselves “what more could we have done to spare our children from having to go through this at such a young age?”. But then, as the shock wore off and the reality sank in, I think the parents both realized these were still their kids and they were going to need to their parents’ help and support.
