Race, Racism

I'll be frank with you these words barely meant anything to me growing up.
Heck I had never heard of them

Skin colour was never a factor in Nigeria. It's not something that defines your lifestyle and what other people think about you.

I've always wondered why I had to call myself a black woman if I'm not black but African.

Reading Americanah, I realized that racism is something we're subjected too. No matter how we deny it.

In my home land I might be just me, a Nigerian, Okay maybe my religion and ethnicity might play a role in defining me.

But the moment I find myself outside our cultural bubble I become a black woman. One of the marginalized communities because of both my skin and gender.

Ifemulu is a character I think 90% of people will come to hate.
But if we're just a little bit sincere with ourselves, there's a bit or maybe alot of Ifemelu inside each and every one of us.

She's a normal human with emotions- she gets insecure, angry, selfish, afraid.

Americanah is a beautiful book that not only shows you how disruptive love can get but how your skin colour plays a major role around the globe.
