The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
by Mackenzi Lee
WOW I did not like this book.
it almost seemed too good to be true tbh. queer lit set in the ambiguous past (which actually turned out to annoy me if anything seeing as it couldn't decide what exact era it was from)
the protagonist was this whiny white dude who was so far up his own arse. I'm sorry. ik it had to be historically accurate in the sense that they have ~different attitudes~ towards race/gender/sexuality etc but it seemed as though the author didn't know whether to be liberal in its approach to handling said issues or fully committed to recreating the past.
henry just... had this insufferable, white saviour aura that just rubbed me the wrong way.
by surrounding him with a diverse cast it just made his whole white saviourness stand out and he just reeked with this desperation that did not. read well.
also that throwaway joke about self harm towards the end just made me huuugely against this book as a whole.
ugh. no.
(just googled the author and she's a white woman lmao surprise wow)
