Mangeterre
by Dolores Reyes
The idea behind an Eartheater is really a strong one. And the whole eating earth part was done in a sensible way. I liked all the physical implications it had, like we could nearly feel it ourselves. Then there were also the social consequences, such as the mix between rejecting the Eartheater while at the same time also needing her help. The feeling of true isolation was strong and "showed" (instead of being told). I also liked the actual representation of violence against women and the depiction of poverty in the slums. To conclude, I would say I enjoyed the setting of this book.
However to me, it lacked something to make it more impacting. Like a proper story with a bigger sense of conclusion or something. I cannot pin point it exactly, but I found it a bit monotonous in stakes.
