Masters of Atlantis by Charles Portis
4.0

The writers room of Classic Era Simpsons must have had so many people who read this. An obvious parallel to draw would be the Stonecutters but frankly there’s a lot of Burns/Smithers energy in this, as well as Dr. Nick and the particular brand of failure typical of Kirk Van Houten.

I’ve heard this described as “the great Coen movie never made” and yeah, that about fits the bill. I love their True Grit adaptation but whoa mama they could make this sing.

Rather touched by the oddly sweet finale? In the protagonists’ senescence, Portis makes them find a measure of peace not in the transcendent but in the utterly mundane. Ah friends mayhaps there is more overlap between the two than one might think…

I had to make an ebooks.com account to read this, by the way, get your head out your ass Amazon.
