dknippling 's review for:
Fatherland
by Robert Harris
A masterpiece. I liked most of it--excellent writing, deft characterizations of a number of Nazi public figures, a sense of freedom rather than painstaking restraint with the historical inaccuracies. And yet I nearly thre up my hands at the big reveal at the end.
Was it the time that the book was written? I don't know enough about historical fiction at the time. It seems so odd now, though, for such a big reveal to be something we already know. It was we'll set up, but still I found myself distanced from the book at that point.
