Backman is such a perplexing writer to me. I understand the emotions and they’re there but something about them feels… unearned? His characters feel right on the edge of too shallow; they don’t talk or act like real people so I feel like I’m expected to feel for them just because I’m told to. It’s really hard to explain. I did feel emotional reading parts of this but it felt cheap! Ah! I don’t know!
