Horrid
by Katrina Leno
Haunted house and a cursed family, what could go wrong?
A lot, as it later turns out.
If this isn't one of the most intriguing opening lines I don't know what is.
This book is the October reading list aesthetic.
I mean look at the covers. The nursery rhyme is used as chapter names. The theme. The haunted house. The overall vibe.
It even is set in autumn.
So we have a mother and a daughter moving from sunny California to a small town in Maine, in the house of their deceased grandmother which is very old and creepy. And then as time goes by, they realize that the house may not be as empty as they thought it was.
The high point of this book is the writing.
Finally. The writer did a great job of making one hell of a terrifying but captivating book. I was really pushing it to know what the heck is going on. The suspense was high.
Jane's anger was palpable, almost as if making the "Angry-Jane" a whole other character.
The family secrets and hereditary traits running in it is also a thing I love reading in fiction. And this family is full of secrets.
I don't remember being this interested or anxious while reading a mystery/thriller/horror book.
The ending was something I didn't expect.
Overall, I am still under the impression of this book, so I might return later to add some more thoughts about this book.

Actually a pretty scary and atmospheric book. RTC.

"She couldn’t remember the first book she had eaten."
