A Gathering of Old Men
by Ernest J. Gaines
I just love the understated way that Ernest Gaines writes dialogue and description. It's so concise and powerful and really gets you into the characters' mindsets. The story just passed by really smoothly for me because I wanted desperately to know what happened to each character and was so intrigued by the intimate knowledge of the setting.
The only reason this isn't 5 stars (and it's close) is because I didn't find the plot the most exciting.
