A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie

5.0

"In my experience, the past don't drop back far"

Benefitting from having 7 books proceeding it, despite being the first in a trilogy, A Little Hatred dives right in at the deep end and immerses you in the new industrial age of the world of the First Law! The cycles of violence keep spinning and the descendants of the characters of the First Law Trilogy follow some very familiar paths. Despite the set up for the story basically being a redressing of The Blade Itself, the story uses this completely to its advantage, to tell a very new story, mostly about how it's the same thing again.
This builds on and improves everything great about the books that came before to make something truly incredible. It fixed any nitpicks you could take on the First Law Trilogy - with this book boasting fully formed female characters active in their own stories, an incredible interior resolution within the book as well as setting up the future installments, and a fantastic pace and structure balancing the character moments with the action climaxes (though I personally don't see the 'slow pace' of the original trilogy as an issue).
I also love how it groups perspectives into blocks of events in one of two key plots in the second part, really helps with this book's amazing pace and structure.

Anyway, if the first book in the Age of Madness is THIS strong, I cannot wait for the rest of it!!
