The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young

3.0

3.5 stars! This was a good book but I think the whole time I was reading I was waiting for it to be AS GREAT as Sky in the Deep; which totally isn’t fair but I couldn’t help it. The positives: Adrienne Young writes the best battle scenes I’ve ever read! I love this about her books. Her descriptions are so vivid that I can picture exactly where I am in every scene. And her characters - I love them - they are so well developed which again goes back to how well she describes them. The negatives: I found the back and forth narratives between the two main characters broke up the flow of the story too much for me. I found myself just getting really into one character’s voice and story point of view and then I was ripped out of it. It felt too chopped up. It’s not that I mind a story told from multiple perspectives, I just thought each character didn’t get long enough with each chapter to really immerse me in their personal story. Overall, I will still read every book this author writes because she is an amazing storyteller. And, I will still recommend this book to anyone who loved Sky in the Deep!

I won an advanced reader’s edition of this book from St. Martin’s Press in a goodreads giveaway.
