1.5

I should have known better than to read this, as it’s squarely in a genre I personally do not like: crime novels focused on horrific acts of abuse against women and the impact of that on the women’s lives. This isn’t a bad book, it’s just not for me. That said, I did give it 1.5 stars for two of the characters who were truly excellent: the long-suffering and unfailingly loving husband (relatedly: great depiction of a complicated marriage that is still full of love and care), and the elderly, edge-of-dementia veterinarian who dispensed wisdom in the form of animal parables. God, I want a whole novel just of him.
