This was hard to review for me. On the one hand, I would never have read this as a teenager. There was unnecessary bad language and the plot focuses on teenage promiscuity. On the other hand, the book was written by a 17 year old and unfortunately a lot of what is portrayed here is somewhat how teenagers act/think. Of course, some things were romanticized, but it wouldn't be hard to step into a high school and find similar behavior. One reason I like to read YA books is that I often find them more impactful than adult reads, and I like to understand what kids I work with read.
Like I mentioned above, as a teen I would not want me to read this, but as an adult I did find this book to have some charm to it. I like how loyal the main characters were to one another and how they were willing to help one another. I liked Wesley's character, flawed as he is, and was rooting for him. Our main character Bianca had a lot of problems and was never sat down by an adult to talk about them (which was a shame), but I did like her as well. There were times that I was mad at how selfish she was and how much the author and narrator blamed Wesley when it was not his fault at all, but in the end, I did feel Bianca learned her lesson. Also, for having been written by a 17 year old, I was impressed with the writing and all of the references to classic literature. Kody Keplinger is definitely a bright individual, and you can tell when reading this. I just wish the story had more of a moral compass throughout.
