On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

5.0

On the Come Up is about a 16-year-old rapper, Bri, that is faced with difficult choices about her future. She's trying to win her first battle and become the greatest rapper of all, like her father would've been, but he died before he could.

The plot spoke to majority of the teenage and young adult aspiring Black rappers; showing them another way to both make it and rap. It was a traumatic story that so many know so well. The struggle to remain you in the face of your environment, that is pulling you to be whom "the hood" made you to be. It is about standing up for what is right and denying what is wrong; leaving your past behind you and following your heart.

Let's not forget that the lyricism in this book was dope, and I would get the album, if ever released. Angie spoke to the heart of all the girls and boys growing up in rough neighborhoods, trying to make it out before they become a statistic. It also features queer characters and an overall arch that you would not see coming.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and I can't wait to see what Angie Thomas come up with next.

What decisions would you have made in Bri's shoes? Drop them below. If you're pressed for time, and this was a quick read in between tasks, drop a pink heart in the comments.

Love, peace, and dope reading!
