Gory Details: Adventures from the Dark Side of Science by Erika Engelhaupt
5.0
Intriguing, educational, but also just a funny, quick read, which is sometimes hard to come by with scientific nonfiction. It’s an excellent introductory book to all things weird and scientific—kind of like Mary Roach (whom the author admits is a favorite of hers), but a little faster paced with a slightly higher-level of detail. I did learn quite a bit about a lot of random things. For example, the many ways flies could potentially contaminate a crime scene or even plant an innocent person’s DNA…with their poop. And a really horrifying, yet hilarious story involving decaying rats in a ceiling that belies one of apparently many ways having an older house in the northeast US can totally fuck you in a way that might keep your home from ever really feeling clean again.
