Educated
by Tara Westover
Sometimes, when someone asks me if I like a book, I say, "It's very popular." Sometimes, I say that because I haven't read it, but I want to acknowledge that I've heard a lot about it, and a lot of people like the book. Other times, I have read it, and I don't like it, but I don't want to put people off reading the book, so I try to show that I'm probably in the minority here, so don't be put off by my opinion, which I hope you won't ask.
In the case of Educated, the latter case applies. I didn't really like this one. I kept wanting to read it because I'd heard so many good things from people I trust, but I never really connected with it. It was tough to read about the extended verbal and physical abuse that the author withstood, and I thought her initial foray into formal education was fascinating. I kept reading and I wanted to know what happened, but now that it's over, I don't feel a strong impression in my mind. I'm trying not to react to the hype in a contrary way, as if I were too cool to like a popular book, because I am obviously not. I don't know. I think that not every book is for every person, and that the right book also has to come at the right time, and somewhere in that mess of variables, something didn't add up for me with Educated.
