The Eternal Heir by Liv Viola

3.0

The Eternal Heir by Liv Viola is an adult urban fantasy novel that will leave you dying for more. As we make our way through the pages if this book we’re introduced to Ava, our main character in her twenties, who recently moved to Berlin for a better job and on a quest for answers about her real family. After all, she recently discovered that the person who raised—the person she used to call her grandmother—wasn’t related to her in the tiniest bit. This revelation made Ava feel like she needed answers about who she was and who her family was, but little did she know of the events her curiosity would unfold.

During a random night out with her coworkers in Berlin, Ava runs into this captivating and alluring man known as Jean-Pierre. Since the moment she laid her eyes on him, Ava can’t take him out of his head. It’s not until she makes her way out of the bar that night that she realizes that maybe his looks and the way he interacted with her were a little too good to be true. She is attacked and left unconscious, and when she wakes up she realizes she’s been kidnapped by Jean Pierre and his female companion—who eventually orders him to kill Ava and he does. When Ava wakes up in the middle of nowhere and with a strange craving for blood, she’s horrified about the fact that she’s been turned into a vampire. But as she meets again with Jean-Pierre and he starts teaching her about her newfound powers her fear and horror are forgotten. In fact, Ava thinks she’s adjusting pretty well to being a vampire but everything changes the moment she does her first human kill and they have to run.

From this point of the story forward the story starts getting a bit more interesting. Ava finally gets to meet Helene—the woman who ordered Jae to kill Ava—and we finally get to know more about why Ava was turned into a vampire and why Jean-Pierre and Helene want her to be on their side. Turns out that Ava is the last heir of the royal vampire line that rules over Europe and commits atrocities against their own people, the vampires. Jean-Pierre, Helene and many other vampires have come together to rebel against them and fight for better treatment and justice, but will Ava agree with their cause? That’s a question I’ll leave for you guys to figure out.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the story that Liv Viola brought to life through this book. I will admit that I wasn’t a big fan of the pace of the story at the beginning or the biggest fan of our main character, but the plot, the plot-twists and the whole family drama and secrets were entertaining enough to keep me reading. Because of this, I ended up giving this book a 3.5 star rating yet I would still recommend it to everyone looking for a short, interesting and intense book about vampires that doesn’t just focus on romance.
